The Short Version
I’m Anna, a 55-year-old San Francisco Bay Area native who just discovered something that changed everything: I’m already a Swedish citizen. My husband Nick and I are now planning our move to Sweden, and I’m documenting every step of this journey because I wish someone had shared the real process with me.
How Sweden Became Home Before I Even Knew It
My mother was born in Sweden and moved to the US in 1964, retaining her Swedish citizenship. Starting when I was nine, she began sending me to Sweden alone to connect with her side of the family. Those childhood summers turned into a lifelong bond. I picked up conversational Swedish naturally and developed close relationships with my grandmother, aunt, uncle, and three cousins who became like siblings to me.
The Plot Twist
After years of visiting Sweden and always feeling like it was home, Nick and I would return from each trip dreaming about moving there permanently. My Swedish family embraced Nick with the same warmth they’d always shown me, making our dreams feel even more real. But we assumed it was impossible, just a beautiful fantasy we’d never be able to make happen.
Then came the citizenship letter that changed everything.
Why This Blog Exists
‘m documenting our planning process in real time because I couldn’t find the honest, detailed information I was looking for. Most moving abroad stories are told in hindsight, when the stress has faded and only the highlights remain. I want to share what this actually looks like as it happens: The excitement, the bureaucracy, the costs, and the countless decisions involved in turning a lifelong dream into reality.

Current Status:
Planning phase: we’re targeting our move for when we can make it financially and logistically feasible, likely within the next 18-24 months.
About Nick:
My husband of five years is along for this adventure as my biggest supporter. As a US-only citizen, he’ll be navigating the traditional immigration route while I figure out what having dual citizenship actually means for our planning.
